opening bids


1.

balanced hands are 433, 443, 533 shape.

12+ to 15, open 1n.

24+, open 2n.

16 to 23, open 1d.

1d is usually a strong nt, but is used also for gf hands with any 5 card suit.

2.

hands with three 4-card suits,

12+ to 16,  open 2c .

17+,  open 2d

that was good enough for the roman pairs, but maybe this is better:

with c's and 2 others, open 2c.

with d's and 2 others, open 2d.

prefer 2d with 17+, 2c with 12 - 16. this allows responder to pass with some weak hands, so requires

lho to act immediately, not allowing certainty of delayed action. which range opener has will be

immediately evident from the rebid, if any.

3.

unbalanced hands have a 6-card suit, or 5-card and another suit of 4 or 5.

1h and 1s are longer suit, 12 to 20.

1c is either minor, 12 to 20.

responder will bid 1d if necessary.

4.

a weak two is a 6-card  major suit of 8 to 11 points.

5.

major suit auctions:

major raises are constructive, 8 to 10 points.

jump raises are balanced, 11 to 14 points with 4 to 7 trump.

jump shift in lower rank suit is 5-card suit with support.

3n is 4441 with support.

1n followed by preference is weak raise, 6 to 8 points, or doubleton, 6 to 9.

1n followed by jump preference is bal raise, 11 - 14 points with 3 trump.

2n response is 15+ points, balanced, may have support. also, 4441 with

singleton in openers suit.


2 over 1 is 5-card suit, 10+ points, denies support.  auction may end in 2 of

openers first suit, or 2n, or 3 of responders suit.


6.

1c auctions, responses:

1d is 0 to 9 points.

1h and 1s are 5-card suit, 6+ points.

2c is 5-card suit, 10+ points.

2d is 5-card suit, 10+ points.

2h is 6-card suit, 4 to 7 points.

2s is 6-card suit, 4 to 7 points.

1n is 10 - 14 balanced and also 4441 or 4414.

2n is 15 +, balanced and also 4441, 4414.

3c is all 4441 hands with both minors, 9 - 11.

3d all 4441 with both minors, 12+.
